Dr Lucy van der Weide
BScBVMS MANCVS (Behaviour)
Dr Lucy is a veterinary behaviourist who can relate first-hand to the every- day struggles of living with a special needs pet with behavioural problems.
Working up in remote Western Australia Dr Lucy discovered her passion for all things behaviour. Whilst managing a busy veterinary hospital in the Pilbara she noticed on a daily basis her patients were coming through the clinic doors with various mental health struggles which were negatively impacting their quality of life and the bond they shared with the families.
With referral over 1100 km away she decided to prioritise the emotional health of these patients and undertook a series of post-gradating training in VBM to further her knowledge and expertise in this area. During her time in the Pilbara she also worked closely with rescue group SAFE (Saving Animals From Euthanasia) to assist in the management and rehabilitation of many pets with serious behavioural problems. Furthermore, Dr Lucy also became passionate about embracing fear-free practice techniques throughout the practice, to “take the pet out of petrified”.
Dr Lucy continues to work as a veterinary surgeon at the Victoria Park Veterinary Clinic.
When Dr Lucy isn't attending to her four-legged patients she can be found at the gym lifting weights, walking her border collie around Sunny Perth, madly supporting her beloved Melbourne Demons or downing a good coffee or two!
